Johannesburg, 14 September 2025 – Energas Technologies has announced that Orcan Energy’s advanced waste-heat recovery (WHR) systems are now available to South Africa’s cement industry. Under a new distributorship agreement, Energas will supply Orcan’s modular Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) units to local cement plants, enabling the conversion of exhaust heat from kilns and coolers into clean electricity for on-site use. This solution offers South African producers a proven pathway to boost energy self-sufficiency and slash emissions: studies show that WHR can meet up to 30 % of a cement plant’s electricity needs while sharply reducing their carbon output.
International examples underscore the impact. In Germany, the SCHWENK cement works installed five Orcan ORC modules and now recovers over 8.5 million kWh of energy per year – avoiding roughly 13,200 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.
Major multinationals are following suit: Holcim recently noted that “smart use of industrial waste heat not only reduces our Scope 2 emissions, but also strengthens our role as a pioneer in sustainable building materials”. Such projects demonstrate how capturing otherwise-wasted thermal energy makes a cement plant both greener and more cost‑effective.
Orcan’s technology is purpose-built for the cement sector, able to harvest low-temperature waste streams that traditional systems miss and Orcan will work with each producer to customize installations – often under Energy‑as‑a‑Service financing – so plants enjoy immediate energy savings with no up-front capital outlay.
Key Benefits of Orcan’s Waste-Heat Recovery Solution for Cement Producers
- Higher energy self-reliance: Capturing waste heat can supply up to ~30 % of a plant’s power, significantly cutting grid purchases
- Large CO₂ reductions: Field data show annual carbon savings on the order of 10,000+ tons per plant (one plant achieves ~ 13 200 t/yr).
- Lower operating costs: On-site power generation reduces fuel consumption and exposure to volatile energy prices.
- No initial investment: Modular ORC units fit existing sites and can be leased via Energy-as-a-Service, enabling immediate gains without capital expenditure.
By adopting Orcan’s ORC waste-heat recovery solutions, South African cement manufacturers can advance their own decarbonization goals while improving competitiveness. Energas Technologies, as Orcan’s local partner, is ready to guide industry operators through feasibility studies and installations.
